We built
the breeding program at the Bar
L Cattle Company
around our Premier Herd Sire J.R.
Seman. He was a 1997
son of the late, great Gunman and is out of one of the
best producing cows in the breed J.R. Sequential. J.R.
Seman, commonly
referred to as "The Number One Son of Gunman," was a powerful blend of Senator, Bail Jumper and G-Man.
He was a very smooth bodied bull with over 65" of horn at
five years old and almost 70" TTT and over 95" TH at his death in 2009.
J.R. Seman was one of the most acclaimed bulls in the breed.
In 1999 J.R.
Seman was rated
the second Longest Horned Two Year Old Bull in the
breed by the Texas Longhorn Journal. In 2000
He was one of only 32 out of over 250 of the all-time
greatest bulls to be voted in the Top 50 Most Valuable
Herd Sires in both categories of the Texas Longhorn
Journal’s Sire Service Value Survey. Again in
2000 J.R.
Seman was named
the Fourth Longest Horned Three year old Bull in the
breed in the Texas Longhorn Journal’s 2000
Longest Horned Bulls issue.
As impressive as he is to
look at, J.R.
Seman’s true
strength was his ability to make a major impact on a cow
or herd with his genetics. He was selected to be the
mainstay at the Bar L Cattle Company ranch for this very
reason. Just as his sire Gunman had the ability to
produce off spring even better than himself, J.R.
Seman possessed that
hybrid vigor that enabled his powerful genetics to not
only be passed on to his offspring but to literally
explode into his offspring.
J.R.
Seman calves have
shown explosive horn growth at young ages. This is
most certainly the G-Man influence showing up. His
Bail Jumper and Senator background are very evident
in his offspring as well. His calves have been consistently
tall with a lot of substance and volume. Weaning weights
have been very high. The proof of his greatness, however, has been the fact that his offspring have consistently sold at high average prices and quite often have been sale toppers in terms of price. This allows owners of his offspring to bring value and profitability into their herds. Help adding to this value is the fact that he is a very
well known bull that has gotten a lot of press coverage
and promotion because of his impressive horn growth and
genetic superiority. Again, this adds to his ability to bring profitability to our customers.
We have retained and continue to breed many J.R. Seman daughters in our breeding program. We also have an inventory of J.R. Seman semen that we use to breed our other cows. You can still get the benefit of this power genetic Herd Sire in the cattle at the Bar L Cattle Company today.
